A New Serif With Contemporary Elegance From TypeType: TT Tricks
In business since 2013, TypeType foundry was established as one of the very first digital font foundries in St. Petersburg. Founded by Ivan Gladkikh and Alexander Kudryavtsev, the foundry studio has worked with an impressive number of graphic designers, typographers, and engineers to craft their type designs.
One of the most important characteristics of TypeType’s work is the balance it manages to achieve in each one of its font releases. Knowing well what graphic designers need in their work, TypeType crafts letter sets that offer a high degree of versatility in their application, while adhering to contemporary design aesthetics and providing extensive multilingual support – especially where Cyrillic alphabets are concerned.
When Ivan and Alexander founded TypeType, they probably could not have imagined just how much success the foundry would go on to achieve. A font’s true success lies in its adaptability and its usage, so it’s little wonder, then, why TypeType’s work is so popular. They consistently offer a wide range of weights and widths, in addition to numerous OpenType features, giving graphic designers a lot to work with.
TypeType also puts a lot of weight into artistic collaboration, which is why you’ll often see a number of designers sharing credit on their releases. One of their more recent releases, TT Tricks, was designed by Sofia Yasenkova, Philipp Nurullin, and Vika Usmanova.
Sofia has been working in graphic design for a number of years, and actually took a course on typography at TypeType Education, the foundry’s own lesson series. She paired with Phillip and Vika, who are active members of the TypeType team. Both of them also share an extensive background in graphic design; Vika’s strengths lie in branding, while Philipp’s reside in web design and typography.
When this trio came together to craft TT Tricks, the idea actually originated from a project that Sofia had to complete for her graduation. She chose to create a daily planner, a project that led to a number of stylistic decisions and interesting details.
The architecture of TT Tricks is classic and contemporary at the same time, giving it a rather timeless quality that’s probably never going to go out of style. Its letterforms carry themselves with a confident sophistication that lends a subtlety to its panache. TT Tricks is pure elegance, a beautiful serif font that features asymmetrical serifs and uncommon stylistic details. It’s a serif font that visually stands apart from the rest.
TT Tricks offers its letterforms in Regular and Stencil. Each is comprised of Light, Regular, DemiBold, Bold, ExtraBold, and Black weights, with corresponding true italics for each, for a total of 24 complete character sets. The range of weights in two distinct styles makes this family well suited to any project that needs a traditional serif type design with a modern flair, including headlines, editorials, publishing, web copy, advertising, logos, product packaging, stationery, invitations, menus, event programs, branding, and identity projects.
Like most of TypeType’s other releases, TT Tricks is loaded with additional features that include small capitals for the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets, along with standard ligatures, discretionary ligatures, ordinals, numerators, denominators, fractions, oldstyle figures, tabular figures, proportional figures, capitals to small caps, contextual alternates, and stylistic alternates for incredible design flexibility. Its multilingual support extends to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, and Basic Cyrillic for design projects on the global stage.
Right now through May 18, 2018, TT Tricks is on sale for 78% off of its regular price, so it’s the perfect time to add this classic beauty to your font collection!
