Alfredo Marco Pradil established Hanken Design Co. with his wife in 2012. With more than a decade of experience under his belt, Alfredo has worked in visual merchandising and identity, game development, advertising, product design, and typography. He’s partnered with some pretty major brands, including well-known international corporations like Absolut Vodka, Jameson Whisky, Dell, Dell Blue, and Royal Salute.

Alfredo has harbored a fascination with lettering and the creation of his own letterforms since  childhood. “Seven years ago when I discovered that typefaces were designed using softwares that can be bought commercially, I instantly knew that my passion as a kid came back and I will not let go of it ever again,” he expressed.

His preferred approach to typography is a blend of simplicity and function, with little regard for geometric perfection. For Alfredo, an amazing font should “help a designer convey a certain message with minimal obtrusion,” in his own words.

Hanken Design Co. offers graphic designers affordable fonts that also provide extensive flexibility in their projects. One of their latest releases is HK Nova Rounded, a sans serif whose inspiration lies with Century Gothic and Futura. “I have a long time fascination with typefaces that NASA used for their collaterals and hardware,” Alfredo explained. “HK Nova Rounded is the softer version of HK Nova that is an amalgamation of different geometric typefaces of previous generations. It makes me happy if I am able to create my own take on a geo-grotesk.”

HK Nova Rounded takes a clean, minimalistic approach to its letterforms, offering absolute clarity through every message it conveys. Legibility is crisp and straightforward, even in small point, making it an excellent choice for small-screen mobile applications and business cards. It is additionally well suited for corporate communications, white papers, headlines, editorials, digital publishing, and e-books.

Alfredo’s favorite moments during the design process are the drawing and testing stages. “Kerning is also an enjoyable part of the process although it can be quite fiddly,” he added. Rounding the corners of HK Nova Rounded was a surprisingly difficult task, although the finished result was well worth the effort.

HK Nova Rounded is available in nine weights that range from a whisper Thin to a robust Heavy for extensive design versatility. It’s packed with additional treats that include discretionary ligatures, standard ligatures, numerator, denominator, stylistic alternates, subscript, superscript, and ordinals. HK Nova Rounded provides multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Vietnamese, Pan African Latin, Pinyin, Igbo Onwu, and Basic Greek for worldwide accessibility.

Alfredo is currently working on an edgy didone and a slab serif, although his next planned release will be the upgraded Radnika™— Radnika™ Next.

“This is only the beginning and I have lots more to show you guys in the near future,” Alfredo shared. You’ll definitely want to keep an eye on Hanken Design Co.’s portfolio on YouWorkForThem. “I am a very diligent and hardworking person,” Alfredo told us. “My goal is to give good quality and affordable fonts to designers that have no way of getting ahold of great type.”

To that end, HK Nova Rounded’s Medium weight is available for free, allowing designers to test the font’s capabilities for themselves in both personal and commercial projects alike!
