Holy Micro-Structure Batman! Complex Matters works with, among many disciplines, designers (see Sean Hanna and Assa Ashuach) producing intricate and flexible material lattices. It will be interesting to see the how the relationship evolves between aesthetics and performance with such hyper-specificity.

Delappe_Walking

Joseph Delappe is reenacting Gandhi’s 240 mile “Salt March to Dandiâ€? on a modified treadmill which powers his Gandhi avatar in “Second Life” as part of an installation at Eyebeam. Delappe will be completing his virtual/physical journey on April 5th. It is interesting to think of how other, ‘every day’, users of Second Life would participate with a Virtual Gandhi. Furthermore to think of the possibility of having something along the lines of a virtual NYC marathon! More screen-shots can be found here.

I have been following this topic on the internet lately and it shows what happens when a user by the name Daniel_K tried to fix the problem with his Creative sound card. Well, he got in trouble, but more in the likes of Creative bashing him online before contacting him. He explains his faults and what he shouldn’t have done (taking donations, a whopping $146 total). At the same time, he explains what Creative did with this product launch and driver updates, basically bringing an older model to its knees so you would have to buy a new model. Check out the article at WIRED. Another reason why YouWorkForThem has gone basically 95% Apple in the past year, no time for all these hardware upgrade issues! Too each his own!

We understand that it can be hard getting a feel for what a book contains when looking at it on the web. We, on the other hand, get to spend a lot of quality time with the books we have in stock, so we felt it may be helpful share a few of our favorites with you.

abracadabra2.jpg“The ABRACADABRA bookmark aims to make finding where you left off and opening to that page easier. I didn’t know it was an issue but now I hate my ordinary paper bookmark. The ABRACADABRA contains an air-filled chamber, half of which is flattened by the weight of a book. Squeezing the exposed side inflates the concealed side lift the page just enough for your finger to slip in.” – Yanko Design

lou dorfsman

The Center for Design Studies has purchased and begun restoration of the Gastrotypographicalassemblage – one of the most important artifacts in graphic design history. This masterpiece by Lou Dorfman and Herb Lubalin adorned the walls of CBS until its dismantlement in the 80′s. Read the classic tale of heroes and villains and get involved.

Dwell Magazine has a video section, featuring random designers etc. Check it out, enjoy.

Also, Jay from Magers and Quinn wrote and said that Chip Kidd will be speaking in Minneapolis at the Minneapolis Central Library on February 27th at 7pm. Maybe it’s me, but the ending of that Chip Kidd video freaked me out.

polaroid.jpgPolaroid is dropping the technology it pioneered long before digital photography rendered instant film obsolete to all but a few nostalgia buffs. Polaroid is closing factories in Massachusetts, Mexico and the Netherlands and cutting 450 jobs as the brand synonymous with instant images focuses on ventures, such as a portable printer for images from cell phones and Polaroid-branded digital cameras, televisions and DVD players. This year’s closures will leave Polaroid with 150 employees at its Concord headquarters and a site in the nearby Boston suburb of Waltham, down from peak global employment of nearly 21,000 in 1978.
