But 2008 was the year we saw a new face by the signature ‘T Minus 5’ conquer the sales with his royal and lush Regime drawings. YouWorkForThem has always been focused on Typography since day one. This year we spent a lot of time and energy on font development and commissioning new work, with big results. We premiered the idea of Hand-Set fonts, showing the world that typography is much more than what exists inside a font.

Black Slabbath
The Heaviest font in the world, Black Slabbath, was the biggest font of 2008. Period. After being around for less than a year, you can not go a day of looking around without seeing it’s influence somewhere. Stefan spent countless months working on this typeface and it shows. The form is spotless and the features are many. After seeing this font for the first time, we knew Stefan was onto something and we waited patiently for him to finish it while giving him some help and encouragement. Black Slabbath is timeless and prove itself as a classic in the world of letter-forms. Exclusively at YouWorkForThem.

Myld
Andreas is a very talented individual with a foot in every aspect of graphic design. We have known him for many years and have watched his career explode. It is great seeing people like him develop fonts as he has a very different approach to the art. One look at his collection of faces will prove this.

HLLVTKA
We have hand-lettered a sans-serif so many times we can not count it on our hands. That is where HLLVTKA comes in to fill that void. What we love about this font is that it is free from the shackles of software, so you can freely experiment with the letters and set it exactly how you want. We enjoyed using this font and looks like some other people did as well.

Dubby
Blake E. Marquis has one of the most amazing names we have ever heard, its no wonder he has an eye for letters. We fell in love with Dubby at first sight as the possibilities are endless with how you can manipulate it with form and color. We are happy to have worked with Blake in 2008 and we are working with Blake on future developments, watch out for him in 2009.

Thinaire Unicase
We have always admired thin type and whimsical markings of a pen. This is where Thinaire shines. It is the perfect merging of the two ideas. The best thing about Thinaire is that it can be used smaller to get a hairline feel or used large without overbearing the page. It also offers the flexibility to be used many different ways. We just developed a typeface this year called Hannah that functions as a working typeface. Be sure to check it out as well.

Rising Star: At the end of the year, we released Agostina. It’s a sans-serif font that has OpenType ligatures for that extra typesetting flair. The best feature about the font is that you can give it as much or as little flair as you wish. We released it at the end of the year but so far it looks like a future winner for 2009!

mos_ps1_01Michael Meredith and crew won this year’s P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center’s competition to redo the PS1′s courtyard. You can read more about it at the NY Times.

Congratulations and if the name sounds familiar, it could be because of this book/dvd manifesto. Highly recommended.

picture-3We just put up another page or two of books for sale. We now have three pages of books at the “nice price” that you just can’t resist. A couple of my favorites are the Hiroshi Tanabe, Gottfried Bohm, The Music Library, and Vaughan Oliver! Thanks and more books to come!

84_designers_republicLooks like this Tuesday the Designers Republic closed their doors down, according to CR. Looking back at their work now would be semi-interesting still, but seeing it first hand was a pleasure. From buying lps to dropping out of school, tDR was a huge inspiration to me. I remember when the Emigre Issue 29 came out, design started to click for me. Seeing a company that could operate in the mainstream and also be ‘underground’ was a huge thing back in the day. They constantly hit hard with every project and inspired me to always do something different. Rest in Peace.

zine4

We are proud to announce the release of ZINE4. This time around we used our new product line up Guilloche & Moire as the methods and medium of exploration.

Guilloche is an engraving technique in which a very precise intricate repetitive patterns or design is mechanically etched into an underlying material with very fine detail. Specifically, it involves a technique of engine turning, called guilloché in French after the French engineer “Guillot”, who invented a machine “that could scratch fine patterns and designs on metallic surfaces”. The machine improved upon the more time-consuming practice of making similar designs by hand, allowing for greater delicacy, precision, and closeness of the line, as well as greater speed.

In physics, a moire pattern  is an interference pattern created, for example, when two grids are overlaid at an angle, or when they have slightly different mesh sizes. In textiles, a moire is a fabric with a wavy (watered) appearance, caused by varying the tension in the warp and weft of the weave.

My friend Jeff Johnson from Spunk, started a video blog where he interviews designers, called Design Smoke. Jeff is often wearing a hat and smoking a cigar, thus guessing that is where the “smoke” part comes in. Jeff was/is one of the the most influential art directors in the Minneapolis area, moved out of the country for a bit and came back to start Spunk. What I like is the candid nature of the interviews, often being as odd as the interviewer is. Good stuff.

My latest side project, Buamai, is now official. The goal of Buamai was to gather a select community of authors to begin creating an interesting image archive relative to art and design. The project is in its very first stages, so its fresh, small and just now getting off the ground but in the coming months it should develop into something to cure anyone’s boredom online. So try it today, and just start clicking from image to image, keyword to keyword, link to link.

01042009_hannah_blog

Starting 2009 with a bang, we bring you Hannah!

Hannah is a font comprised of three versions that work together as one, producing not variation and contrast between weights but between widths. The loose, hand drawn quality adds yet another layer of personality to the font. Hannah is similar to one of our popular Hand Set fonts, ThinAire, but is available in OpenType format which makes Hannah much more versatile. There are also some additional unicase characters included in the font which can be activated as contextual alternates in OpenType.
