As mentioned in our last post, it is the Thai new year here in Bangkok, known here as Songkran. We had a rough new year this time around, but the chaos has moved along and peace is with us now. In honor of the new year and an end to the chaos, we are happy to present our latest freebie. One super hot file of various botanical and flourish like elements. This file is a little different than our usual products, because it contains illustrator transparencies and we saved as CS3. Typically our stock vector products are saved as EPS version 8, so basically anyone can open them with any major image/vector editing application (you would be surprised at the amount of Corel draw users out there).

We hope you enjoy this free set of beautiful vectors!

We are coming back early from the Thai new year here at the Bangkok studio. Last week and today we posted a handful of new stock vector collections. A few classic themes like flourishes and frames in there, along with new topics and elements many of you might find useful.

On the topic of us being in Bangkok, some of you might have seen the news of some mad craziness going on here. Luckily our studio is in intense traffic jams the past 2 weeks, everyone in our studio was unaffected directly by any of the violence. Unfortunately for the people living here, no matter what side you support, the violence that went down this week does not help anyone here, especially the struggling local economy which survives a lot on the tourism industry. But the good news is, for now, the protesters have left and the leaders arrested for various crimes.

That being said, Thailand is Thailand and this not something really new as far as wanting the government to change, but violence is NOT typical. These violent protests were really restricted to a specific part of the city as well, an area most tourists are never in. So if you had plans to come here for travel, holiday, fun times, it is still the fun loving and good Thailand, no worries, you will be OK. I am still here typing this, so it must be ok! haha…

A behind the scenes look at our new handset font, Michel. The letters were created by a wild, untamed river of ink carried by water’s movement across the page.

“Seeking political asylum, Ahmed Alsoudani left Iraq for the United States in 1999. His paintings and drawings reflect the troubled contemporary history of his home country, yet they belong to a tradition of painting depicting war and atrocity.”

Nice blog post on Louis Kahn and design by committee.

“If you get direction from a committee”, Kahn once advised corporate leaders about design, “I am positive the product will be less, the expression will be less. If it can be in an individual, it will have such resources that a committee meeting many, many times would never have. The individual has the ability to see it all as a unit. From sketchy first realization mixed with faith in what is realized, can there be exchange of a designer and the man who wants the design made. There can be a fruitful exchange which can make the executive a better executive and the designer a better designer.”

picture-61I have always enjoyed seeing Gunta Stolzl’s work, but never have seen more than ten or so of her works. Gunta’s work often seems to be overshadowed by the male Bauhaus team of geniuses. It is hard to see why her work was not represented better after looking at this site. Amazing stuff.

I have been meaning to link this up for a week and figure I just gotta do it fast or I will never do it. Bran from Grow organizes this motion collaboration called PSST and it is amazing. You should check it out and you will be glad you did.

picture-6Travis showed me this trick the other day on how to make a quick grid in AI. I always make my own grids but this is a great way to crank out something good and fast when you don’t have the time to obsess.

First thing is to create your page margin that your information will be inside, then draw a big box. Select the box, go to Object>Path>Split into Grid… you will have your settings there to make how many columns etc you need… DONE.

Often we like the things we could/would find ourselves doing. For example, these stacked totems of colors and shapes by Pica Pica.

Go pick them up.
