issue2_plus_robLooks like It’s Nice That Issue 2 has been printed and is for pre-order. 128 pages with four main features, seven interviews and 50 pages of select work. Looks very well done and nice to see time and effort into a publication.

LOREM IPSUM VADE MECUM is a publication we’ve pieced together to provide our community with insightful content about typography and other design topics while utilizing our versatile font collection. LOREM includes articles from Design Assembly, Willi Kunz, Terese Elhard, Matt Desmond, Ryan Nelson and interviews with Gerard Unger and John Maeda. The compendium was designed in collaboration with Sarah Kissell. This compendium features many of our popular fonts and incorporates stock vectors and images where possible. All fonts are linked at the bottom of each page which should make purchasing them fairly easy. We hope you enjoy!

A design and screen printing studio focused on mentoring students to produce excellent work for the benefit of others is the mission of Ambrose and I couldn’t be more excited about what they’re doing. This is what it’s all about in my opinion and I’m stoked there are people out there doing things like this. If you need to do a run of t-shirts soon why not give these guys a call and help others in the process.

Stumbled upon Esther’s work a few weeks ago and was inspired by her commitment to serve others through her creative giftings. Esther Havens is a humanitarian documentary photographer who focuses on social-awareness campaigns with non-profits around the globe, capturing stories that transcend a person’s circumstance that reveal the strength of an individual regardless of the situation in which they find themselves. Esther has traveled extensively to over 40 countries and seeks to open hearts and minds to see the third world conditions in a way that might challenge them to make a difference. Her photographs have been displayed in various exhibits across the country. She currently resides in Austin, Texas and New York City and continues to travel on assignment.

3837509586_78408bf290 Werner Design Werks came out with a book entitled “Alphabeasties and Other Amazing Types.” The fold-outs are a nice touch and I like the additional information it gives with ever letter/animal. Great stuff and for sure worth a look/purchase.

Sister is a small press run by Harsh and friends. It is a collection of small run art zines at a very limited amount. Very interesting idea and fascinated by it. I wish there were more images but I guess that is part of the deal, trust.

What are you working on right now? A pretty good balance of personal projects and branding stuff for some startups.

What career would you switch to if you had to stop your current profession? Full-time mountain man. Overgrown beard, straw hat, cabin in the woods, the creepy old dude that’s almost folklore to little kids in the town below. When I’d go out for good I’d leave behind all these wild phallic wood carvings and fancy corn cob pipes. I haven’t thought about it too much, really.

U2

2009.08.11

In February of 2009 we got a call from Catherine Owens, the long time super creative director for the uber-famous band U2. Catherine came across our work and knew she found the team who could help with U2’s 2009 world tour (titled 360). After a quick stint of meetings in New York, we came back to the Bangkok studio and begin work for the following two months on numerous ideas.

We began our development on the videos for the tracks Beautiful Day, Ultra Violet and The Unforgettable Fire. The first series of works involved filming small fish common in the canals of Bangkok for very fluid and dreamlike sequences. For the second series we explored mapping the films into a 3d space and further distorting them for an enhanced depth and perspective. Then for the last series of works we explored more solid colors, 2d and fast paced clips to stimulate lighting effects and screen energy during the performance. In the end we created over 100 different sequences, with over 300 total clips delivered in various formats, colors and speeds.

The concert opened in Barcelona on June 30, 2009 to a sold out crowd of 90,000 fans. The screen that displayed this work was designed by Willie Williams, Mark Fisher, Chuck Hoberman, and Frederic Opsomer. The screen was composed of 888 individual hexagonal panels that support 500,000 Barco LED pixels. It can transform from seven meters to 22 meters high and move up and down. To sum it up, this is the most massive and badass screen ever and we were mega-amped to have worked on such an intense project.
