The YouWorkForThem Blog

One of our very talented customers just let us know they used the font Ivory (by Facetype) for a recent project. The result is a very nice example of Ivory’s beauty when combined with such beautiful filming. Have you use one of our fonts/stock in a project? Share it with us!

We have been having a great month for fonts, with many new designers joining the team and designing many new handsets and opentype collections. One of our latest designers to join the team is Ashkahn. We though we would take this quick moment to tell you you really should check out their work. Lots of great type, patterns and album work going on in the portfolio. Also, check out their first addition to the YouWorkForThem collection, Anything.

LOREM IPSUM VADE MECUM is a publication we’ve pieced together to provide our community with insightful content about typography and other design topics while utilizing our versatile font collection. LOREM includes articles from Design Assembly, Willi Kunz, Terese Elhard, Matt Desmond, Ryan Nelson and interviews with Gerard Unger and John Maeda. The compendium was designed in collaboration with Sarah Kissell. This compendium features many of our popular fonts and incorporates stock vectors and images where possible. All fonts are linked at the bottom of each page which should make purchasing them fairly easy. We hope you enjoy!

I just posted started to post a few high definition (HD1080) videos on Vimeo of our newest dvd release, The Interpretation. I will continue to post a few more chapters from the dvd (minus the audio) in which you get to see a rare level of the detail in our motion work, you can also grab the quicktime download at Vimeo. Currently this DVD is listed for $9.98.

We are curious, would you like to shop for our stock vectors as single drawings or do you enjoy how we do it now as collections of 25 drawings? For example, iTunes allows you to buy single songs, or buy the entire album from a musician. Which method do you enjoy?

updates

We have some good news for those of you who purchase items from our site.

This past weekend we updated our system to no longer need those pesky download codes! Now when you go to download your items, you can instantly grab your purchased items from the receipt, no need to enter the code to access the file. This should help speed up the process and make your life that much more easier.

2) The stock video section is currently getting a complete overhaul. We will now be selling the stock videos as individual items for one low price. This should make it easier for you to drill down and purchase the exact clips you may want. Keep an eye on this section, in the coming weeks we will be releasing numerous new videos.

For the past few months we’ve been creating something of a journal meets type catalog in collaboration with recent graduate, Sarah Kissell. We intend to demonstrate how our typefaces can be used in an appropriate context while also providing rich content for our customers, students, and the design community to dive into. Look for the completed, perfect bound copies to be available soon.

As mentioned in a previous post, me and the crew of YouWorkForThem Bangkok recently rocked over 300 videos for U2′s new tour. Finally today, we found some evidence of our contribution on the mega-screen! Not the best quality video (earthquake cam), but at least its a start for now. We hope we they decide to use more of the work in the set as the tour continues. Either way, we will be showing a preview of our contributions in due time. (our work kicks in around 1:10 for a short bit)

Back in February we got a nice call from Catherine Owens, long time super creative director for the uber-famous band U2. Catherine came across our video This is Agostina and knew she found the team who could help rock some video/visuals for this years U2 360 world tour. For the past few months we went to New York for meetings, came back to the Bangkok studio and have been rocking on over 200 video clips for the upcoming show. The concert opens in Barcelona on June 30, 2009 to a sold out crowd of 90,000 fans. For complete tour details you can visit the U2 Tour schedule. To get an idea of stage and the size of screen we created video work for (its MASSIVE), you can check out the U2 360 website.

As we come to wrap on this project, we are really excited/anxious to show everyone the video we contributed to the project. As soon as the tour gets rolling we will release more details (permitting all NDA rules of course). Till then, just go check out the show, I am sure U2 will give you one hell of a show!

open-type
One our most common customer service questions is ’how do I get the swash items to show up in Adobe Illustrator.’ Well, we suggest you read these tech notes from Adobe which will easily show you where and how to use these extra swash characters in fonts like Agostina. For more information on the OpenType format, check out Adobe’s OpenType Page. Each Adobe application handles OpenType a little different, so check the specific application help docs on how to view the opentype options, Adobe has all this clearly listed in the documentation.

For OpenType development and technical details, these links provide a wealth of information: Microsoft, Unicode.org , Gallery of Unicode and Fontlab.
