Established in 2008 by Eduilson Coan, dooType is an independent type foundry headquartered in Brazil. Eduilson is a self-taught master of his craft, working on both custom and commercial font projects for more than a decade. He completed a postgrad course at Type@Cooper in Manhattan in 2015, further honing his skills for the field he is most passionate about.

His foundry has enjoyed a great deal of success over the years, working on custom projects for notable brands that include Sheraton Hotels, Honda, Veja Magazine, and Unimed. dooType is also a staunch advocate for typographers in general, supporting and participating in local events related to the craft. Eduilson finds collaboration to be an incredibly fulfilling endeavor, and in 2016, he brought Gustavo Soares onto the dooType team.

Gustavo is an expert in type and typography, having obtained his MA in Type and Media, and a second MA in Information Design. With two strong typographers working tirelessly behind the scenes at dooType, the foundry is sure to see continued success.

One of their most recent releases on YouWorkForThem is dT Jakob, a contemporary geometric sans serif with a Brazilian flair. The font initially began as a revival of sorts a little over ten years ago, when Gustavo was still enrolled in a class at the Type and Media Masters in The Hague. The bones of dT Jakob were based on Erbar, an early geometric sans designed by Jakob Erbar in the mid 1920s.

Sometimes the best things come from revisiting and revising old projects, even many years later. With dT Jakob, Eduilson and Gustavo wanted to provide a strong yet versatile type design that would work equally well in display and body text applications. To that end, they built a wide range of weights that could suit just about any project imaginable.

They note that hairline weights are particularly tough to design, but they did so exceptionally well with dT Jakob. Its beautifully elegant structure is whisper thin yet surprisingly strong, conveying its message with clarity and amiable authority.

Straight terminals save on space while adding a decidedly humanistic impression on the geometric architecture of dT Jakob. Its lighter weights are perfect for body copy, editorials, web content, mobile applications, product packaging details, labels, corporate communications, and publishing. dT Jakob’s heavier weights are impactful without feeling pushy, delivering an important message with urgency and tact. They’re well suited to displays, signage, headlines, advertising, logos, product packaging, posters, and book covers.

dT Jakob is packed with extra features that include case sensitive forms, numerators, denominators, standard ligatures, ordinals, oldstyle figures, tabular figures, and stylistic alternates for additional design versatility. Multilingual support extends to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Catalan, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, Dutch, and Basic Greek for extensive global accessibility.

dooType currently offers 12 products through YouWorkForThem, a variety of elegant scripts, strong slab serifs, modern sans serifs, and robust serifs to suit a wide range of design projects.
