The gorgeous landscape of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, is home to The Northern Block, a design studio and foundry who’s known around the world for releasing top quality type designs. Jonathan Hill established The Northern Block in 2006, and it’s been a harbor of artistic collaboration ever since. The studio has built an incredibly supportive and creative habitat for graphic designers and typographers, one that enables everyone to work together in a positive environment.

While much of their work captures the visual essence of modern and advancing technology, The Northern Block’s portfolio encompasses a wide variety of contemporary design aesthetics to suit a broad range of themes and projects. One of their most recent releases is Engel New, an angular serif and sans serif family with a mechanical edge.

Designed by Sofie Beier, Engel New celebrates and upgrades her original design, Engel, also published by Die Gestalten Verlag. The Engel New Sans project initially began as an expansion of the 2005 original, bringing the typeface current with OpenType. Engel New Serif soon emerged as a sibling to its predecessor, a perfectly complementary letter set that offers the same number of weights.

The evolution of Engel New Sans has ultimately resulted in a much more developed and self-assured improvement upon the original, featuring an architecture that’s just a little bit softer and rounder, with more visual harmony between its shapes. In fact, The Northern Block compares the differences between the characteristics of Engel and Engel New to those of a person growing older and (hopefully) wiser. Where Engel “shows traits of a cool teenager with rough edges, not yet fully developed,” Engel New portrays “the more mature” stage in life.

Inspired by heavy machinery and the British steel industry, Engel New feels edgy and modern, with a geometric, almost robotic structure. That isn’t to say it appears cold or rigid in its stature, however, as its angular details have been softened just enough to make it friendly and quite pleasant. It stands with confidence and intelligence, speaking with the utmost clarity in a straightforward tone.

Engel New is well suited a vast array of projects, which was The Northern Block’s intent. They wanted to “motivate an element of play and give the designer a larger selection to work with,” a goal they met and exceeded with this family. Engel New is an excellent choice for web design layouts and body content, headlines, editorials, digital and print publishing, mobile apps, corporate correspondence, and presentations.

Both Engel New Sans and Engel New Serif include ExtraLight, Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold, and Bold weights with corresponding italics for each, totaling 24 variations for incredible design flexibility. Offering standard ligatures and oldstyle figures, the family extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Central European, and Pan African Latin languages for global accessibility.

Right now through July 15, 2017, Engel New is on sale for 80% off of its regular price so it’s a great time to add this one to your collection!
