Official Release

In April 2011, graphic designers Jamie Winder and Iain Hector left London to travel across Southeast Asia, meeting with fellow creatives at each point of their journey.

‘Where You Going? Design Adventures in Southeast Asia’ is a consummately designed 220-page journal that documents their experiences, and features conversations with like-minded creatives in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore. It presents 14 interviews and 22 showcases, along with a range of photographs, unusual infographics and fascinating historical creative facts, plus a foreword by renowned designer and contemporary visual artist, Stanley Wong.

The book aims to compare the graphic design industry in Southeast Asia to that of the West, also exploring how the cultural differences between each destination affect the local scene. In addition, it seeks to inform a wider audience and promote the work of its contributors — both locally and internationally. With a relative scarcity of documentation of design output in the region, the authors also hope the book encourages and inspires young designers in Southeast Asia.

The pair were keen for the journal to be much more than simply a visual collection of works from the designers they had met — the kind of content which is readily found on the internet, or seen in many a design monograph. Instead, the book features multiple layers of information to document the entire journey, which the reader is invited to follow in chronological order, sharing the sense of fun and adventure had along the way. The route plan is depicted by meals consumed on each connecting flight; trekking through Chiang Mai’s jungle is represented by leafing through semi-transparent pages of foliage, email correspondence is revealed at the start of each interview.

‘Where You Going? Design Adventures in Southeast Asia’ published by Basheer Graphic Books, is available to buy in various bookstores across the region, including all those cities featured, as well as some selected stores in China, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea. A European release is expected to follow soon.
